How to Read a Supplement Label Like Someone Who Makes Them

We manufacture supplements for a living, which means we read labels the way a chef reads menus — we can see the kitchen from the wording. Most labels are honest enough. The ones that aren't tend to use the same four tricks, and once you can spot them, you can never unsee them.

Here they are, plus the one-minute check that defeats all four.

Trick 1: The proprietary blend

What it looks like: "Performance Matrix — 8,000mg" followed by six ingredients and zero individual doses.

What it hides: Everything that matters. A blend can be 7,900mg of the cheapest ingredient and a dusting of the five expensive ones, and the label reads identically. Brands defend blends as "protecting our formula" — but doses aren't trade secrets to competitors with lab access. They're only secrets from you.

The rule: No individual doses, no purchase. There is no innocent explanation.

Trick 2: Label math

What it looks like: "Citrulline Malate 2:1 — 6,000mg," which your brain reads as 6g of citrulline.

What it hides: It's roughly 4g of citrulline and 2g of malate. The compound's full weight is presented where you expect the active ingredient's weight. Citrulline malate is the famous case — we've broken it down fully here — but the pattern repeats wherever an active is bonded to a carrier.

The rule: When an ingredient is listed as a compound or salt, ask what the active yield is. Honest brands state it; ours lists 6,000mg of pure L-citrulline because that's what's in the scoop.

Trick 3: The two-scoop serve

What it looks like: Impressive per-serve doses… with "serving size: 2 scoops" in small print, and 20 servings in a tub sold as 40.

What it hides: Half the value. Most people scoop once, get half the label, and blame themselves when it does nothing. Meanwhile the "per serve" numbers on the front were technically true.

The rule: Always read doses against the scoop count and the tub's real serving total. Price it per effective serve, not per tub.

Trick 4: Pixie dusting

What it looks like: A prestigious, well-researched ingredient sitting proudly on the front of the tub — at 5% of the dose the research used.

What it hides: The gap between "contains" and "contains enough." 50mg of an ingredient studied at 3,000mg lets the brand borrow the science without paying for the material. Common victims: citrulline, beta alanine, tyrosine, and virtually every trendy botanical.

The rule: Learn the clinical doses of the three or four ingredients you actually buy for. Then check every label against them. (Ours prints the clinical doses because we formulated to them: 6g citrulline, 4g beta alanine, 400mg caffeine, 1g tyrosine — the numbers are the marketing.)

The 60-second label check

Before any supplement purchase, in order:

  • Every active individually dosed? Blend anywhere = walk away.
  • Compound weights or active yields? Know which you're reading.
  • Serving size honest? Check scoops per serve and serves per tub.
  • Doses match the research? For the headline ingredients you care about.
  • Published third-party results? The final boss — because a perfect label means nothing if the powder doesn't match it. Here's how to read a certificate.

Any product that passes all five is probably worth your money, whoever makes it. Most don't make it past step one.

FAQ

Are proprietary blends illegal? No — disclosing a blend's total weight without individual doses is permitted. Legal and honest are different standards; this is the gap between them.

Why do big, famous brands still use these tricks? Because they work commercially. Most shoppers read the front of the tub, and the front is where the marketing lives. Label literacy is the counter-move.

Is more ingredients better? Usually the opposite. Every extra ingredient in a fixed-cost scoop is dose taken from the ones that matter. Four ingredients at full doses beat fourteen at token ones every time.
