The benzyl alcohol doesn't sterilise the water — the water is already sterile. Its job is to inhibit bacterial growth after the vial has been opened. That's what "bacteriostatic" means: it stops bacteria from multiplying.

This one ingredient changes how the product can be used. Because bacterial growth is suppressed, a vial of bacteriostatic water can be punctured and drawn from multiple times over a period of days or weeks.

What is sterile water for injection?

Sterile water for injection is exactly what it sounds like: purified, sterilised water with no preservative at all.

The moment a vial of sterile water is opened or punctured, it's exposed to the environment — and with nothing in it to suppress bacterial growth, it must be treated as single-use. Whatever you don't use immediately should be discarded.

How long does bacteriostatic water last?

Two timelines matter:

After first puncture: The widely accepted convention is 28 days, provided the vial has been stored properly and every draw was made with a fresh, sterile needle. Mark the date of first use on the vial so there's no guesswork.

If the water ever looks cloudy, discoloured, or contains visible particles — discard it, regardless of the date.

How to store bacteriostatic water

Storage is simple, but it matters:

• Keep vials at room temperature, away from direct sunlight
• Do not freeze — freezing can compromise the vial and its seal
• Keep the rubber septum clean; wipe it with an alcohol swab before each draw
• Use a new sterile needle and syringe for every draw — never re-enter a vial with a used needle

These basic aseptic habits are what the 28-day convention assumes. Skip them and the timeline means nothing.

Important safety notes

Benzyl alcohol is safe for most adults in the small quantities present, but there are two hard exclusions:

• Never use bacteriostatic water for neonates. Benzyl alcohol is associated with serious toxicity in newborns.
• Don't use it if you have a known sensitivity to benzyl alcohol.
